Durham businesses scoop national Countryside Alliance Awards

The annual celebration of British food and farming saw a record number of nominations, with judging taking place virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In County Durham, the Knitsley Farm Shop, near Consett, was crowned regional winner in the best butcher category, getting praise for being “a feast for the eyes with top quality meat and the knowledge to match” and being described as “a real gem in this corner of County Durham.”

And the Cross Lanes Organic Farm Shop, in County Durham, was named Local Food and Drink Champion, with judges saying that “Cross Lanes can talk you through the whole story from pointing to the animals in the field, to the produce on the shelf which ensures this business is a family favourite.”

The Countryside Alliance Awards celebrate rural businesses that go the extra mile, who support their local economy and are the unsung heroes in every community.

The applicants are judged on a range of criteria including their passion and commitment, sense of community, championing local food and the energy and diversity of their business.
