Durham Food Bank makes fresh appeal for donations amid cost-of-living crisis

Donations to meet demand are still needed by Durham Food Bank, part of a nationwide network of food banks supported by The Trussell Trust, on The Drum Industrial Estate.

Latest figures from the Trussell Trust show demand for the food bank’s services have soared in the past two years, as first the pandemic and then rising costs for food, fuel, and energy hit hard-pressed families.

As inflation continues to increase and rising bills put pressure on families, the Trussell Trust expects the need for emergency food to rise further still, over the coming months and beyond.

The food bank particularly needs long life fruit juice, long life milk, jam, tinned fruit, fruit cordial, and tinned custard and rice pudding.

It provides emergency food for three days along with practical support to help people in crisis, and signposts to other services to help people recover, rebuild their lives, and break the cycle of poverty.

Donations are accepted at Unit 7/9 First Avenue, Drum Industrial Estate, Chester le Street, DH2 1AG. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2pm.

The food bank also needs the support of businesses to help tackle food poverty, and there are lots of ways to help including volunteering, organising a fundraising event, or donating equipment to help with the day-to-day running of the food bank.
