Durham Skin Lab creates safer, better sunscreens

The award-winning lab is pioneering new sunscreen research, including testing SPF (sun protection factor) on people, to develop products that really work.

The lab is also creating new products for skin, hair, pregnancy, and babies.

Based at the Drum Industrial Estate near Chester-le-Street, Durham Skin Lab has invested in a new device to test SPF on people. It is believed to be the only lab in the North East currently able to carry out this type of testing.

Dr. Mohammad Alansary, founder of Durham Skin Lab, said: “Sun protection is one of the most important areas of skincare. Testing SPF on people in our studies lets us make products that are safer and more effective. We’re proud to push sunscreen science forward and show that County Durham can lead in skincare innovation.”

Durham Skin Lab and VT Treatment Ltd have developed a new sunscreen lotion using the safest natural mineral ingredients instead of harsh chemicals. Mineral sunscreens are often avoided because they leave a heavy white layer on the skin, but the lab has created a new formula that reduces this while still providing full protection.

Dr Alansary added: “We wanted a sunscreen that feels comfortable and looks natural on the skin. This one protects without feeling heavy.”

As part of its ongoing research, the company is inviting volunteers to test the sunscreen products and is offering payment for participation. Anyone interested can contact info@durhamskinlab.com

The company is also working on three new international skincare brands. One will feature fragranced products to reduce ageing and dark spots. Another, called Sarah Care, will focus on skin and hair care. The third will specialise in pregnancy skincare, including anti-stretch mark treatments and baby products. These projects are supported by well-known investors, an actress, and two influencers. The investors have not yet decided on the brand names.

With its SPF research, new mineral sunscreen, and upcoming brands, Durham Skin Lab continues to set new standards in skincare innovation from County Durham.
