North East rockets ahead in UK space sector

The North East of England is becoming a key part of the UK’s space industry.

Over the past decade, the region’s space sector has grown from a small, niche presence into a thriving cluster of businesses in satellite technology, space applications, advanced manufacturing, and research.

Recent reports show the number of space businesses in the North East rose from 34 to 51, and now there are around 80 companies. Employment has grown from just over 1,000 to 1,340 people, and the sector’s contribution to the local economy has increased from £88 million to about £171 million.

The growth is supported by efforts in manufacturing, research, training, and satellite technology, aligned with trends in the UK and global space industry. A key project is the £50 million North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST) in Newcastle, backed by the UK Space Agency, Lockheed Martin, and Northumbria University. The centre will provide training, research facilities, and collaboration space, helping the region develop new skills and jobs.

For local businesses, the growing space sector offers opportunities for partnerships, supply chain work, and access to skilled talent.
